Suction Excavator Solutions, otherwise known as SES, is the first suction excavator hire company to turn into an Employee-Owned Trust. Bedfordshire based SES, transformed into an Employee-Owned Trust (EOT) in September 2020, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the industry.

“What better way to pass on a fantastic opportunity, empower our loyal employees, and protect the family values SES was built on than transform it into an EOT.” said Charlie Gardener “EOT’s, being a relatively new structure, means we are the first in our industry to adopt one and we are very proud of the impact it has had already.”

EOT’s are renowned for increasing productivity across the workforce and encouraging employees to embrace an entrepreneurial approach to their day-to-day activities. The SES team, led by Lawrence Setchell, General Manager is already witnessing the effect that the EOT has had on the team: “It is going from strength to strength.” said Lawrence. “With people more engaged and empowered to do their jobs. The employees have already seen the fruits of their labour as they have received two rounds of bonuses which would not have been the case had SES remained as it was.”

Scott Robson is a Team Leader in SES and has been with the company since conception. He keeps a close eye on efficiency, right down to making sure the team do not dispose of gloves after just one use. “I am focused on keeping costs down and increasing productivity. We all have a part to play within SES to ensure its success.” he said. Scott is a prime example of when businesses give people opportunities, they do great things.

The announcement of the EOT was made to the team in September 2020, Charlie recalled that day “it was emotional as we entered another chapter of SES, but this felt like the right thing to do.” Since the EOT launch, SES has invested in its fleet by purchasing three new RSP suction excavators, demonstrating the strength and longevity the new structure secures.

John Goodwin, a Team Leader within SES reflected on the past 9 months saying: “It is still a challenge to explain to the newer members of SES what an EOT is and the potential that brings to us all. Once they understand the structure and how it impacts them, we all strive towards the common goal and inclusivity it brings. A structure like this in place breeds loyalty on a scale that is unique in our industry.”

Each member of the SES team now wears two hats, one as an employee and one as a beneficiary of the trust. Being a beneficiary allows the workforce the opportunity to financially benefit when the company succeeds in the shape of tax-free bonuses.

The forward-thinking approach and vision that SES has, collectively, makes them a force to be reckoned with in the future. Bold, ambitious plans lie ahead for this innovative, Employee-owned company.
